Gauri Vrat is observed by unmarried girls. Belief is that Goddess Parvati (Gauri) had observed this vrat to get Lord Shiva as her spouse and hence it is believed that unmarried girls who observe this vrat will get the best husband. Gauri Vrat commences from the eleventh day of the bright half of the month of Ashada in North Indian Hindu Calendar. The young girls grow tender shoots of corn at home in a small pot. They worship the tender shoots and the Sun. The vrat ends on the Purnima day. On this day the girls perform 'cow puja'. They also pay farewell to Goddess Parvati.
