Gruri Vrat

Gauri Vrat is observed by unmarried girls. Belief is that Goddess Parvati (Gauri) had observed this vrat to get Lord Shiva as her spouse and hence it is believed that unmarried girls who observe this vrat will get the best husband. Gauri Vrat commences from the eleventh day of the bright half of the month of Ashada in North Indian Hindu Calendar. The young girls grow tender shoots of corn at home in a small pot. They worship the tender shoots and the Sun. The vrat ends on the Purnima day. On this day the girls perform 'cow puja'. They also pay farewell to Goddess Parvati.

Chaturmas

The period between Ashad sud ekadashi (2 July 2009) to Kartik sud ekadashi (30 Oct 2009) is referred to as the Chaturmas, literally, 4 months. During this time, all disciples will take extra vows such as fasting, scripture recitals, meditation and other religious observances.

A story is narrated in the Purans about the deity Ekadashi, such named because she emerged from the one of the Lord's indriya. There are 5 gnaan indriya, senses, and 5 karma indriya, the controlling organs of these senses. The mind controls all the organs so is considered the 11th organ. Ekadashi literally means eleven, ek + dash, 1 + 10 = 11. The deity Ekadashi was granted her wish and was allowed by the Lord to reside in his eyes for the duration of the chaturmas. Thus the Lord is said to hibernate during this period. That is why the Ashad sud 11 is also referred to as the Devshayani (dev - Lord, shayan - sleep) ekadashi. During the period that the Lord is resting, disciples will practice extra religious practices (niyams) to please the Lord.

On a practical level, this time period is when the monsoon season falls in India. As a result of the heavy rainfalls, it would be impossible for the wandering sages and preachers to travel the land to preach and offer spiritual guidance. Therefore, during this period they would remain resident at one place. As they are no longer travelling, they have spare time, which is occupied with the extra vows, and thus they further please the Lord.

During these four months we have lot of festivals. Some are religious in nature while others have a social significance and importance-Immediately after the advent of Chaturmas we get the Guru Poornima. Thereafter comes the month of Shravana. This month is full of important days. Shravana Mondays are important for the worship of Lord Shankar. The Poornima in this month is the Narali Poornima which marks the end of heavy rain and the throwing of the coconut in the sea appeases the sea and it calms down.

During this four months Some religious books like Mahabharat, Ramayan, Bhagwat or Vishnu Sahastra could be read everyday according to the time available to everyone. Somebody could undertake to pay a daily visit to a certain temple. Others could take a vow to do "Mantra Jap" of a certain mantra for a certain number of times everyday.

Guru Purnima (Asadh Purnima)

Guru Purnima  is the occasion when students revisit their teachers to rejuvenate their  sadhana (spiritual practice) and to receive inspiration and further instruction on their spiritual journey. Guru is a universal force of light, always available to help correct our ignorance and cure our dis-ease.

Guru Purnima or Asadh Purnima is a special day (
7th July 2009) celebrated on the full moon (purnima) day of the month of Ashadh, to pay homage to all teachers (Guru's). It dates back to the time of 'gurukuls' or 'ashrams' of ancient India where students or brahmacharis used to get their education. The students used to worship their Gurus, seek their blessings and give 'gurudakshina' i.e fees or presents according to their means and capacity.

It is also known as Vyas purnima in remembrance of the great sage Ved Vyasa, the guru who wrote the great epic, 'Mahabharatha', the 18 'Puranas' and classified the 'Vedas' of the Hindu Dharma. The great sage is worshipped and pujas performed on this day.

The Guru Gita in the Skanda Purana hails guru in this famous verse:

Guru brahma Guru vishnu Gururdevo Maheshwaraha
Guruhu sakshaat Parambrahman tasmai Shrigurave namaha

'Guru is Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva,
Veneration to the Guru who has manifested as Parabrahman.'

While venerating the Guru we must also be cautious as the world today is filled with fake gurus and swamis – who make a living out of spirituality.

Ramakrishna Paramahamsa says about true guru like this:

He alone is the true teacher who is illumined by the light of true knowledge.

Bees come of themselves to the full-blown flower when the breeze wafts its fragrance all around. Ants come of themselves to the spot where sweets are placed. No one needs to invite the bee or the ant. So when a man becomes pure and perfect, the sweet influence of his character spreads everywhere, and all who seek the Truth are naturally drawn towards him. He need not go in search of an audience to listen to him.

It is very hard to find a true Guru but luckily the great Gurus of ancient world have stored their wisdom in the Upanishads, Yoga Vashista and Gita. Guru Purnima day is rightly termed as Veda Vyasa Poornima because Guru Vyasa is the greatest editor and compiler of holy texts in Hinduism. He has provided all the necessary elements needed to understand Brahman; only we need to find time and have patience to read and digest the unparalleled holy texts in Hinduism.

What to do during Guru Purnima ?

After bath, worship the lotus feet of your Guru, or his image or picture with flowers, fruits, incense and camphor.

Fast or take only milk and fruits the whole day. In the afternoon, sit with other devotees of your Guru and discuss with them the glories and teachings of your Guru.

Alternatively, you may observe the vow of silence and study the books or writings of your Guru, or mentally reflect upon his teachings. Take fresh resolves on this holy day, to tread the spiritual path in accordance with the precepts of your Guru. At night, assemble again with other devotees, and sing the Names of the Lord and the glories of your Guru.

Blessing to you and your Family.

Conference on ‘Indian Astronomy- Ancient & Modern’

Astronomy is considered to be perhaps the most ancient of sciences. It begins as soon as we look up at night. As we look up, at first the starry sky seems motionless. But if we continue to make observations night after night, the sky appears to be moving in a regular and predictable fashion. The constellations shift a little bit westward each successive night, the moon drifts west to east, changing position in the sky relative to the stars and the sky is an open lab for one all without boundaries.

As the entire world is celebrating 2009 as the International Year of Astronomy, the galaxies of space scientists along with eminent astronomers are getting together in Gujarat to brainstorm on 'Indian Astronomy, Ancient & Modern' in a conference being organized during 27th to 30th June 2009 at Town Hall, Ahmedabad.
